Storage Organizers Guide

Good Storage Saves Time

Good storage and good organization go hand-in-hand. Without good organization, a homeowner runs into the situation where he or she wastes time trying to find something it is most needed. This happens almost anywhere in the house, including the kitchen, the bathroom, bedroom, garage and even exterior outdoor spaces.

Consider the image of a well-organized dressing room above. Multiple compartments as well as hanging space ensure that clothes are easily accessible without rummaging. Imagine the time savings in the morning when you are able to select quickly what to wear before rushing out the door.

Garage

Garage storage has become obligatory as the garage space is used for many more reasons than just for storing the car. Sometimes the garage doubles as a workshop where major wood working projects are undertaken. The result is that excellent storage solutions are required to keep all the items sanely organized.

Closet

The closet of the bedroom or any other room is primarily used to house clothes but also sometimes holds things like cleaning supplies, light interior machines like vacuum cleaners or sewing machines. Closets tend to clutter up without shelving or partitions. A good closet organization system is key to reducing the clutter and enhancing productivity. People lucky enough to have a walk-in closet should pay attention to special considerations. Walk-ins should have sufficient circulation zones that allow movement in and out of the closet easily otherwise transport of items in and out become a chore.

Kitchen

The kitchen area is where cooking happens. And cooking is where many disparate elements come together. The kitchen must store implements, utensils, plates and bowls, glasses, handheld tools, and many types of food. People who cook understand the importance of having something stored in a fixed place so it is easily found when needed. Kitchen drawers have a lot of variety best suited to the different types of items found in the kitchen. Wooden posts in drawers help corral dishes that otherwise slide around haphazardly. Roll-out shelves surpass stationary ones for increased ease of access (but higher costs of course).

Bath

In recent years (by this we mean past 20 or so from 1990-2011), bathrooms have gone through a lot of stylistic changes in the U.S. Comfort, relaxation are the keywords. Put in a peg bar to hold multiple towels for family members, labeling each peg to reduce clutter and confusion. Some people put in small footprint pedestal sinks but fail to consider that sometimes these do not have undersink cabinet space. Accessorize open shelf space with containers and baskets to hold commonlly used items.

Outdoor

The outdoor area is increasingly being used for recreational or entertainment purposes. The deck of the back porch, the area around a swimming pool, or a shaded front yard serves as exterior living space. Some homeowners even set up outdoor kitchens to accommodate guests that use these spaces. Good storage is essential for keeping all of the outdoor-specific items organized in a systematic way.

Accessories

Although we may have a lot of storage compartments, shelving, drawers etc, sometimes we need more tools to help us. For example, kitchen or garage cabinetry that is too high ends up being inconvenient, probably underused and dangerous to access. A mini step stool with just two steps helps immensely in this regard. What about places that get wet easily like under the sink? Having a hanging and removable basket, or a gliding shelf allows one to reach those areas for easy mop-up.

Small Appliances

By small appliances we mean the kitchen gadgetry found in most homes like breadmakers, mixers, rice cookers etc which are necessities but don't fit easily anywhere. For these some people turn to countertop garages that have roll-out shelving, lift doors which hide the items out of sight. The problem of course is how can this specialized storage be made to harmonize with other needs of the home?

Other
